WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in an office setting with frequent interruptions, multiple priorities and deadlines, inquiries, and peak workloads.
May require flexible work schedules including early morning, weekend and evening hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work requires extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, reaching, stooping, pushing, pulling, manual dexterity, clear speech and visual and hearing acuity, and transporting boxes and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives supervision and direction from the Help Desk/Operations Administrator and other Information Technology Division management staff.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Information Technology Assistant I:
This is the entry level class in the Information Technology Assistant series.
This class is distinguished from the journey by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series.
Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level.
Information Technology Assistant II:
This is the full journey level class within the Information Technology Assistant series.
This class is distinguished from the Information Technology Assistant I by the assignment of the full range of duties.
Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
Minimum Qualifications Information Technology Assistant I One (1) year experience performing complex and specialized customer support tasks, using standard desktop applications such as Microsoft Office and Internet browsers is required.
Education equivalent to graduation from high school is required.
Technical, college or business school course work in computer science, business applications, telecommunications, or a closely related field, is highly desirable.
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required.
Information Technology Assistant II Two (2) years of increasingly responsible customer support experience, equivalent to an Information Technology Assistant I (using standard desktop applications such as Microsoft Office and Internet browsers) with the City of Fairfield are required.
Experience with desktop computer hardware support is desirable.
Education equivalent to graduation from high school is required.
Technical, college or business school course work in computer science, business applications, telecommunications, or a closely related field, is highly desirable.
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required.
Examples of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Receive, log and track all calls from users related to City Applications, desktop, laptop, MDC, cellular and telephone questions and problems.
Complete telephone system move/add/change requests and act as liaison with service providers to resolve telephone problems.
Monitor and operate computer equipment and peripherals; maintain logs in accordance with procedures; perform routine maintenance and cleaning of hardware; maintain tape library, perform backups, coordinate off site storage and archiving of backups; execute recovery procedures.
Organize and maintain various IT files and city-wide hardware and software inventory.
Attend to a variety of office administrative details such as ordering supplies, arranging for the repair of equipment, transmitting information, and keeping reference materials up to date; operate standard office equipment.
May develop, operate and maintain databases, spreadsheets or other automated systems.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of computer and telephone support services, computer hardware and software applications and associated security, backup and desktop support procedures.
General office practices and procedures, including customer service.
Information Technology policies and procedures, especially trouble tracking systems.
Basic computer desktop operations knowledge; the use of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
Ability to:
Obtain and maintain security clearance sufficient to work within the Police Department building.
Communicate clearly and easily with users and vendors of varying levels of technical expertise; ask questions and get information in order to diagnose telephone and computer problems and discern what level of support is needed when a problem is presented.
Work as part of a team in stressful situations; maintain composure and a sense of humor in the face of heavy workload, constant interruptions and occasional angry customers.
Operate a wide variety of telephone and computer hardware and software, as well as standard office equipment and quickly learn use of new technologies and applications.
Perform complex or difficult office support work, organize, prioritize and coordinate work activities, and research and maintain office files.
Compose routine correspondence from brief instructions.
Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
